Connection and re-assurance
Mindings connects socially isolated and technology-shy people to their family, friends and community, and it provide reassurance to those people that care that their loved one is okay.
Mindings is a private social network that enables family, friends and carers to share pictures, texts and a daily calendar on digital picture frame in the home of a loved one. It’s been described as “Facebook, for the technology-shy!“.
How does it work?
A free App runs on an iPad (even the oldest of iPads) in the home of your loved one. Family, friends and carers, who have been approved, can send pictures and text messages from their mobile phones to the Mindings picture frame. And an online calendar can be connected to display a simple “To Do” list for the day’
The pictures, texts and calendar rotate in a loop – like a carousel. When a new picture comes in, the oldest picture drops off. In this way, your loved one has a window on the world of what the people they care about are doing now, or have been doing recently.
And, the beauty is, when a new picture or text message appears, it pauses the carousel, and the user must press the “GotIt” button. When they do that the carousel continues, and the person who sent the picture or text gets a message in return to confirm that it’s been received. Fundamentally, Mindings is letting everyone know that this person that they care about is alive, well and interacting with the world.
We call this “Social TeleCare” – it’s caring, just by being social. The user gets the thrill of seeing pictures and receiving messages from the people they care about, and the people who send the pictures and messages get to know in return that the recipient is okay.
Mindings is a personal project, developed by Digital Media producer Stuart Arnott for his own family. It has won many international awards, and is run as a non-profit project, for anyone who might benefit from it. Being a personal project we are limited in the number of users we can take on, but if you write to us and tell us why you think Mindings could help you, we’ll do out best to set you up with an account.
