Smarta’s video interview with Mindings’ Stuart Arnott

If being featured in Smarta’s “60-Second Start-Ups” earlier this month wasn’t a big enough thrill (it’s my favourite business website), they invited me to do a video interview with them last week.

I’m used to being on the other side of the lens (I’m a video producer when I’m wearing my other hat) so having a camera pointed at me was an interesting experience (it’s not as easy as it looks)! Fortunately the nice people at Smarta only used the good bits!

It’s a personal thrill that Mindings is featured in Smarta’s “60-Second Start-Ups” this week. Smarta is a one of my favourite business support websites, run and backed by some of the UK’s top entrepreneurs. Check out the article here.

Smarta is a great resource. In particular, I love their advice videos, featuring interviews with brilliant people like Deborah Meaden, Julie Meyer, Martha Lane Fox and Simon Duffy. Well worth checking out.

The Guardian praise Mindings for best App interview

The Guardian Apps Blog made its debut in February 2011 with the aim of covering the apps space, from innovative new applications for smartphones and tablets to the startups and developers that were making them.

As 2011 drew to a close, they rounded up what they considered the more thought-provoking interviews from the year. Mindings came in at the top of the Social Apps – above Facebook and Instagram!

Needless to say, we are thrilled to be among such illustrious company!

Mindings featured in The Guardian

On Friday, UK’s The Guardian profiled Mindings, with the wry headline “Elderly relatives not on Facebook? There’s Mindings for that…”

I first met technology journalist Stuart Dredge at the BlueVia/Telefonica-organised Power of One conference. Stuart used the announcement of our Beta trails to write a very positive piece about our up-coming service.

“Mindings Clinical Study” to be presented at Kings Fund Telecare Conference

This summer, five “prototype” Mindings picture frames were used in a clinical study in a major London hospital to see if Mindings could help people during their recovery from major brain injuries (stroke, road traffic accident etc). After such an injury patients often remain in hospital for up to six months, which is difficult for patients, and their families. The study tested to see if Mindings could improve the patient’s memory, and/or improve their well-being.

On 24 November, the researcher and myself presented preliminary findings at a research conference at the hospital. The main conclusion is that not only did patient well-being dramatically improve, but so did their family’s. Among other things, the families said that they felt they were really helping with their loved-one’s recovery.

The research will be published in the New Year (hence why I currently can’t say too much about the details of the study), but today The Kings Fund confirmed that the research paper has been accepted as a poster presentation and speaking slot at their “International Congress on Telehealth and Telecare” in March 2012.

To say we are delighted would be an understatement…!

Mindings wins top startup award!

Mindings was one of five tech start-ups who emerged as winners of the Cambridge Wireless Discovering Start-Ups 2011 competition tonight!

At the final pitching event twenty competitors presented in front of a packed Cambridge University Queens College theatre, judged by senior representatives from companies including Microsoft, RIM, Nokia, Qualcomm Ventures, Innovacom, Broadcom, Orange, O2 Telefonica and ARM.

The other worthy winners were Advanced Balance Systems, Blu Wireless, Qiqqa and Proxama.

“Mobile Monday” founder tips Mindings as one to watch

Respected mobile media specialist, and Co-Founder of Mobile Monday, Helen Keegan (@technokitten), has cited Mindings as one of the mobile startups she has her eye on, in her Mobile10 interview on the Camerjam blog.

Helen has been championing accessibility for some time, and recently was involved in running accessibility workshops around the UK for the Vodafone Foundation Smart Accessibility Awards.

Helen also tipped Mindings’ friends Ribot, who created Threedom, the first simple interface built to allow anyone to easily use a touchscreen mobile.

Mindings being presented at Bath barcamp

This Friday I have been asked to present at Bath’s openMIC Mobile Innovation Camp, at an event for which the brief could have been specifically written for Mindings!

At an event entitled “Android and The Internet of Things” the opportunities presented by the availability of sub $100 Android tablets will be discussed. The number of internet connected devices is rocketing and Android devices that are not smartphones or tablets could be a major driver in this growth.

Smart cities, intelligent homes, mHealth application, motoring computing devices all communicating to make the world a better place is the vision, but how could a $100 android device provide useful services in the short term?

Mindings will be one of five examples being presented to the Bath Innovation Centre audience.

The event is sponsored by, among others, The ICT Knowledge Transfer Network, Microsoft and Nokia.

“The Next Web” website reviews Mindings

I was privileged to present Mindings at the Blue Via/Telefonica event “Power of One” at London’s Battersea Power Station on the 11th of November.

The reaction was terrific, and many attendees and fellow contributors kindly Tweeted about both Mindings and my presentation.

One particularly nice follow-up of the event, though, is the press coverage it has helped generate. The Next Web‘s Paul Sawers wrote a feature about how much he and The Next Web team were impressed by Mindings.
